Summer CAMP Program
(8 weeks)
These programs
will focus on the development of play and social interaction skills
using a combination of Sensory Integration and Floortime
techniques, as well as sensory, motor, and speech and language
development. They are designed for children who could use additional
practice in these areas, or have IEP goals related to the
above-mentioned areas. Children will be grouped by age and skill
levels to ensure that appropriate programming is provided. Typical
peers will also be integrated into our summer camp groups as
appropriate and available.

Minnows:
This group is designed for young children who have had limited
experience in group settings in the past and/or are cautious and
hesitant to explore their environment, to separate from their
parents or caregivers, and/or interact with peers. Young
children with motor impairments who need help and encouragement
to move may also enjoy this group. We will include a variety of
sensorimotor activities to help them learn to move, play and
interact with others. This 1˝ hr. group has a very limited
group size due to staffing requirements.

Dolphins:
This
group is appropriate for children who can handle being in a
small group setting and enjoy moving and exploring. We will
combine a variety of movement and sensory experiences to help
with fine and gross motor skill development, as well as assist
them to play, share, cooperate, and communicate with peers and
adults more effectively. Our goals include helping them find
activities that help them meet their personal sensory needs and
also help them focus on other skill development including
interaction and engagement. Group size will be limited so we
can provide as much intense intervention as possible. Two and a
˝ hr. program with minimum 2 times a week recommended.

need a higher level of challenge. It will incorporate many of
the sensory and motor opportunities, but also includes
structured games with rules, imaginative and dramatic play,
cooperative activities, handwriting practice, and more complex
language development. Group size is limited so we can provide
as much intensive intervention as possible. Two sections of
this 3 hr. program will be available - one for younger children
and one for elementary students. A minimum of 2 times per week
is recommended due to the on-going themes and projects involved
in this group. |

focus on social thinking and play skills, as well as building
interactive friendship skills. Group goals include learning how
to make and keep friends, expressing needs/wants, sharing ideas,
accepting suggestions, learning to compromise, identifying
emotions, monitoring body language, developing personal space
recognition, repairing miscommunication, resolving conflicts and
listening to others. Strategies from the ALERT Program for
self-regulation will also be incorporated. A variety of
activities, projects, games, stories, crafts, and videos will be
used to help the kids develop theses skills and have fun as
well! We will offer both an elementary and a Jr. High section
of this to better meet their needs. May include community

swings, bike riding and other active games be something that
your child would like, or could use practice doing? This class
focuses on developing higher levels of balance and coordination,
as well as helping those children who ‘have to move’ get enough
sensorimotor play to help regulate their nervous system. Through
a variety of gross motor oriented activities inside and out we
will provide appropriate and fun challenges.

Individualized Programs |
|
The P.L.A.Y. (Play and Language for
Autistic Youngsters) Project™ is a set of programs
designed to provide individualized interventions for young
children with autistic spectrum disorders. It is under the
direction of Richard Solomon, MD, who
has over 15 years of experience working with young children with
autistic spectrum disorders and their families. The goal of the
project is to help young children and their families obtain
interventions that are based on the approach of Stanley Greenspan,
MD and his DIR (Developmental, Individualized and
Relationship-oriented) model. The P.L.A.Y. Consultant provides
regular home or center based visits and uses videotape technology
to give families detailed guidance about ways to implement
the DIR/Floortime model. We also have a variety of on-going groups
available to work on these same skills with peers. Please contact
Project Coordinator Maureen Kane-Wineland PhD., OT/L for more
information.
PLAY
Partners:
One essential way to help your child integrate new skills into his
or her repertoire is to practice using Floortime strategies on a
regular basis. Some families find it very helpful to have ‘play
partners’ come to their home to assist them in providing more
‘play sessions’ per week. These partners are supervised by an
occupational therapist trained in the PLAY Project who will assist
them to identify the strategies most appropriate to use with your
child. We have found this to be a very effective way to expand
the therapy program in the home and provide parents with some
needed help. Please contact us if you would like further
information on this program.
FLOORTIME THERAPY SESSIONS: For families not interested in the
entire PLAY Project, but wanting to incorporate more of the
Floortime/D.I.R. model into their program individual therapy
sessions can be scheduled at home or at our clinic. These sessions
will use strategies designed by Drs. Greenspan and Wieder to
facilitate the highest level of development in your child based on
the levels identified on the Functional Emotional Assessment Scale
and some include parent coaching, but not videotaping. More
information on this model can be found at
www.icdl.com or
www.floortimefoundation.org. Please contact us if you would
like more information on this option. |
|
|
Interactive Metronome:
This innovative program combines the concept of a musical metronome
with a patented system that accurately
measures and improves a person’s rhythm and timing. By improving this
fundamental ability, the individual learns to plan, sequence, and
process information more effectively. Current research on this
program has suggested positive impacts not only on the underlying
motor coordination and timing, but also on focus and attention, sport
performance, and some academic areas. For more details regarding this
research and a video demonstration of the program see
www.interactivemetronome.com. This is an intensive program that
requires a commitment of 2-3 therapy sessions per week for 3-5 weeks
for maximum benefit. In some cases this may be covered by insurance or
a private pay rate can be arranged. Contact us if you would like
additional information on this program or help determining if your
child would benefit from this. |
|
|
Assistive Technology Clinic of
Toledo:
This is a
community partnership of professionals who have partnered with leading
manufacturers in the rehab industry to obtain devices/equipment that
allow our clients to demonstrate their vast abilities. Through this
partnering clients can use potentially beneficial technology such as
communication devices, environmental controls, and electric
wheelchairs on a trial basis before purchasing. The multi-disciplinary
team conducts a comprehensive evaluation to determine the appropriate
equipment so they can access their environment in the most efficient
way. Contact Ann Nagle P.T. for more information. |
|
|
Individual PT, OT, and Speech Therapy
sessions are also available for children whose physician recommends
services, or who are receiving therapy services in the school system
during the school year with an MD referral. These services may be
covered by private insurance during the summer. Feel free to contact
us if you have questions about receiving therapy services for your
child during the summer break. |

Parent Testimonials from Previous Groups:
"I can't say enough about the summer
programs! We could see great improvements in his social and
communication skills. He really enjoyed his "group" and looked
forward to going. He didn't realize he was doing work. He thought he
was going just to have fun!"
- Mother of a 5 year old boy
"The summer groups helped my son's social
skills to really emerge! I always knew that he wanted to play with
others but could just not figure out how to make him interact with
kids his own age. Through the many fun activities, such as
making ice cream, mazes that could be set up and crawled through,
and of course, lots of water play (my son's favorite!), his playful
nature really shined through! He learned turn taking skills,
cooperation in a small group setting, and best of all, that it was
fun to play with others! I think the biggest gain that we have seen
is how much fun we are now having with him as he continues to play
and socialize with all types of people."
