An occupational therapist focuses on the functional tasks that
impact a child's ability to interact effectively with his
environment, family, and peers. This includes examining how he or
she takes in information from his sensory system and processes it
for use, how well he is able to modulate or regulate his responses
to the information, and his actual performance of age appropriate
skills. This can
include developmental tasks such as how he physically interacts with
the environment, how effectively he can reach or grasp to eat,
write, or dress, as well as how he functions in a classroom or
group. The techniques used may focus
on enhancing underlying processing and regulation, minimizing
physical challenges, or even improving social participation.
Recommendations regarding activities to do at home, adaptive
equipment, or splinting/bracing that may also be made.
