An occupational therapist focuses on the functional tasks that impact a child’s ability to interact effectively with his environment, family, and peers. This includes examining how they takes in information from their sensory system and processes it for use, how well they are able to modulate or regulate their responses to the information, and their actual performance of age appropriate skills. This can include developmental tasks such as how they physically interact with the environment, how effectively they can reach or grasp to eat, write, or dress, as well as how they function in a classroom or group. The techniques used may focus on enhancing underlying processing and regulation, minimizing physical challenges, or even improving social participation. Recommendations regarding activities to do at home, adaptive equipment, or splinting/bracing that may also be made.
